Ask any disc golfer who actually lowered their score what changed, and most will say the same boring thing: they started putting at home. Not crushing drivers — putting. It's the least glamorous part of the game and the single fastest way to shave strokes.
Why putting is the highest-value rep
Drives are fun and they feel like progress, but a missed 15-foot putt costs you exactly the same stroke as a shanked drive — and you face short putts on basically every hole. Dialing in your putt is the highest-return practice in the sport, and it's the one thing you can do in a backyard, a garage, or a hallway without a whole course.
The at-home setup
You need one thing: a target with chains, set up where you can take repeated throws. A portable practice basket folds up and stores in a closet, then sets up in a couple of minutes on the lawn. That's the whole barrier to entry — once it's standing, you'll throw a few putts every time you walk past it, and those reps add up fast. Three drills that actually help
- The circle ladder. Start at 10 feet, make 5 in a row, step back to 15, then 20, then 25. Miss two and step back in. This trains makeable distance, not hero putts.
- Around the clock. Putt from different angles at the same distance — straight on, off to the sides, slightly downhill. Real putts are rarely dead level.
- Pressure putts. End every session with "make 3 to win." A miss resets you to zero. It teaches you to make the one that matters.
Keep the grip honest
