Golf Alignment Sticks: 5 Training Drills That Actually Improve Your Game

Alignment problems in golf and disc golf are invisible from the player's perspective — you feel like you're aimed at the target, but the body doesn't match. Alignment sticks make the invisible visible: you put them on the ground, you see where you're actually aimed, and you correct it. That immediate feedback loop is why they're in every serious amateur's training kit. Here are five drills worth doing.

1. Parallel foot line drill

Place one stick on the ground pointing at your target line. Place a second stick parallel to the first, at your feet. Stand to your shot with feet on the foot-line stick and use the target stick to confirm where you're actually aimed. Most players discover they're open or closed by 10-15 degrees and have been compensating subconsciously for months.

2. Hip alignment check

After getting foot alignment right, hold a stick across your hips (hip bones, not belt). The stick will show whether your hips are aimed differently than your feet — another common source of inconsistency. Hips, shoulders, and feet should all align parallel to the target line.

3. Shot shape visual drill

Place a stick just outside your target line and angle it in the direction you want the disc or ball to curve. Use it as a visual anchor during the release. You're training your eye to commit to a specific shape rather than trying to aim straight when the flight isn't straight.

4. Disc golf hyzer/anhyzer training

For disc golf: lay a stick on the ground at the release angle you want (hyzer = stick angled down-right for a right-handed backhand, anhyzer = down-left). Match the disc to that angle at release. Repeat 50 times. The consistent angle burns in as muscle memory and you stop second-guessing the release.

5. Distance consistency drill

Mark a specific target distance with a stick as a gate. The goal isn't maximum distance — it's repeatable consistent distance. Land your putt or short approach within the gate 8 out of 10 times. This builds precision over power. Our 48-inch Collapsible Alignment Sticks (2-pack) are the size needed for these drills, fold for travel, and work for both disc golf and ball golf. Full disc golf training kit is in our Disc Golf Corner.
