How Long Do Rechargeable Headlamp Batteries Last?

Every rechargeable headlamp box has a runtime number on it, and every headlamp owner has had the moment where that number turns out to be optimistic. Usually at the least convenient point of the walk out. So: how long do rechargeable headlamp batteries actually last — both on one charge, and before the battery itself gives up?

Two different questions hiding in one

"How long does it last" means two things, and mixing them up is how people end up disappointed. Runtime is hours per charge. Lifespan is how many years before the battery holds meaningfully less than it did new. A headlamp can be great at one and mediocre at the other. Both are worth knowing before you buy.

Runtime: what the box measures

Manufacturer burn times are measured in a lab at room temperature, from a full charge, usually on the lowest useful setting. That's not dishonest, but it is a best case. Read a "60 hours" claim as "60 hours on the dimmest mode, indoors, on a brand-new battery," because that's what it is.

The other wrinkle: many lamps don't hold peak brightness the whole time. They step down as the battery drains, so the last third of that runtime is dimmer than the first third. Some lamps do it gradually and you barely notice; cheap ones fall off a cliff and then die.

What you actually get, by mode

  • Max brightness (full output): 2–4 hours. This is for finding a trail junction or a dropped set of keys, not for walking on.
  • Medium (the setting you'll actually live on): 6–10 hours. Enough light to hike, cook, and set up a tent.
  • Low / camp mode: 20–60+ hours. Plenty for reading, rummaging in a pack, and finding the bathroom at 2am.
  • Red mode: longest of all, and it doesn't wreck your night vision or blind whoever you're talking to.

What quietly drains a charge

  • Cold. The big one. Lithium batteries lose capacity as temperature drops — a lamp that runs eight hours in summer may give you five on a freezing night. Nothing's broken; that's chemistry.
  • Storing it full or empty. Sitting at 100% or near 0% for months ages a lithium cell faster than sitting around half charged.
  • A hot car. Heat is as hard on batteries as cold, and a glovebox in July gets brutal.
  • Accidental switch-ons. A lamp loose in a pack finds the button. Lock-out mode exists for exactly this; use it.

Lifespan: how many years before it fades

Lithium-ion cells are rated in charge cycles — typically 300 to 500 before capacity drops to around 80% of new. Note what that means: at 400 cycles your lamp isn't dead, it's a lamp with about four-fifths of its original runtime. For most people, who charge a headlamp maybe twenty or thirty times a year, that's comfortably five-plus seasons before you'd notice.

Batteries also age on the calendar, not just on use, so a lamp that sat in a drawer for four years won't perform like new either. If your lamp's battery is user-replaceable, that's a real advantage — you're replacing a cell, not the whole light.

Getting more out of every charge

  1. Charge it the night before, every time. Not the week before. The single most common cause of a dead headlamp is a charge that happened three trips ago.
  2. Default to medium. Save max for when you're genuinely looking for something.
  3. Keep it warm on cold nights. In a jacket pocket on the hike, in the sleeping bag overnight. You'll get noticeably more out of it.
  4. Use lock-out in the pack so it can't switch itself on against a water bottle.
  5. Store it around half charged if it's going to sit for a season.

Do you still need a backup?

For a normal overnight, no — a full charge covers you with room to spare. For anything longer than two nights, or genuinely cold weather, carry a small USB-C power bank. It refills the lamp, your phone, and anything else on the same cable, which is a lot more useful than a handful of spare AAAs for one device. A backup light is still smart on winter trips, but a second light and a second battery are different problems.

The honest bottom line

Expect roughly 6–10 hours of usable light per charge on a middle setting, several years before capacity fades noticeably, and a real hit to both in the cold.
