Summer Car Camping Essentials (Without the Overpacking)

Summer is the easiest time to car camp and the easiest time to overpack. The trick isn't bringing more — it's bringing the few things that handle what summer specifically throws at you: heat, long evenings, bugs, and the inevitable after-dark scramble for a light. Here's the short list.

Light you don't have to hold

Your phone flashlight is not a camp light — it dies, it points wherever your hand is, and it ruins the vibe. A standalone lantern that throws soft, even light over the whole site is the single biggest quality-of-life upgrade for camp evenings, which run long in summer. A solar/USB camping lantern tops off on the dashboard during the drive and glows all night — no dead batteries at 11 p.m. (We made the full case in are solar lanterns worth it.)

A seat that isn't a cooler

You will spend hours sitting around camp in summer. A cooler lid is not a chair and a log gets old fast. A packable camp stool weighs almost nothing, packs to the size of a water bottle, and saves your back and your cooler's hinges.

Beat the heat for sleep

Summer nights can swing from sweaty to surprisingly cold once the sun's been down a few hours, especially at elevation. A breathable layer like an XL camp blanket does double duty — a ground throw for the picnic table at golden hour, a layer when the temperature drops. And an inflatable pillow beats a balled-up jacket for actually sleeping.

Don't forget the dog

If the dog's coming, summer is when heat management matters most for them, not you. Pack extra water, a collapsible bowl, and in dry heat a cooling vest — and keep the big activity to mornings and evenings.

The boring stuff that saves the trip

  • Shade. A simple tarp or canopy turns a hot site livable midday.
  • Bug plan. Repellent and a screen beat swatting all night.
  • More water than you think. Heat hides how much you're using.
  • Organization so you're not tearing the trunk apart in the heat — see our trunk organization guide.

Bottom line

Pack for the heat, the long evenings, and the after-dark light scramble — and skip the rest. The full kit lives in our Trail & Camp collection. Have a great summer out there.
